Show and Tell Questions

Driving with Confidence


On your driving test before you enter the car, your examiner will ask you a Show question and a Tell question. If you answer incorrectly you will gain a minor fault on your test.

 


Tell me - Explain in detail

 


Show Me - Point or carry out request.

 


1.Tell me - How you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their condition is safe to use on the road. Answer - 1.6mm lowest tread legal in the uk. Check this across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre. Check wall of tyre for cuts and bulges.


2.Tell me - How would you check that the brake lights are working. Answer - Apply the footbrake and ask someone to check or reflections in window. ( If examiner checking, make sure electrics are on, not engine and they will walk around the back of the car.)


3.Show me - Where you would find the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that you have sufficient oil. Answer - Point to the dipstick and explain that the engine needs to be on a flat surface and cold. Explain that you would pull out the dipstick clean off the end and then dip it back in,pull out and check that the level is correct with the car manual guidelines.


4.Show me - Where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level. Answer- point to the windscreen washer bottle - explain that you would check weekly and top up as required.


5.Show me- Where the engine coolant is and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level Answer - Point to the engine coolant bottle show where the level is and explain that you would check regularly topping up with manufactures guidelines.


6.Show me- Where the brake fluid is and tell me how you would check that you have the recommended level. ( same as engine coolant)


7.Tell me - How you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey. Answer - Test as you set off,check mirrors apply brake. Shouldn't pull to one side and should not feel spongy.


8.Tell me - Where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressure should be checked. Answer - Check Manual, use a reliable gauge adjust pressure when cold,don't forget spare and refit valve caps.


9.Tell me - How you would check if ABS is faulty. Answer - ABS light appears and stays on the dashboard. Check with garage before driving any further.


10.Tell me - How would you know if full beam has been activated. Answer - Blue light appears on dashboard,pull indicator switch to deactivate.


11.Show me - How you would check power steering is working. Answer - Switch on electric ( or steering lock enables itself) gently apply pressure to steering wheel, should feel resistant when stationary light when vehicle moving.


12.Show me - Where the horn is. Answer - Cover the horn with appropriate hands and only sound if requested too.


13.Show me - Where the fog lights are.Answer - by pointing to where fog light button is and explain only used when visibility limited 100 mtrs or less.


14.Tell me - How you would demist the front and back windows Answer - point to demister controls and explain how you work them including the rear demister.


15.Tell me- How you would use windscreen wash on the front and back windows. Answer - point to the relevant controls and explain.

16.Show me - How you would check your handbrake for excessive wear. Answer - Place your foot on the foot brake and then release the handbrake. When you apply the handbrake it should travel a short distance,long distance would mean that the handbrake may not hold on a steep hill and you would then take it to a garage to be fixed.
